In contrast, private-sector employee satisfaction improved by 0.7 points in 2013 to a score of 70.7, according to Hay Group.Government-wide, the 2013 Best Places to Work data show a decline in all of the 10 separate workplace categories that the Partnership for Public Service and Deloitte examined. The biggest decrease involved the sati sfaction of federal employees with their pay, which fell 4.7 points in 2013 and contributed to a decline of 12.7 points since 2010. The second-biggest change involved decreased satisfaction with training and development opportunities, which fell 3.2 points, followed by rewards and advancement, which dropped by 2.2 points.The lower government-wide satisfaction score and the decreases in all 10 workplace issues came during a difficult time for federal employees, who have faced a three-year pay freeze, furloughs, hiring slowdowns and across-the-board budget reductions. The Office of Personnel Management survey that is the basis of the Best Places to Work analysis was taken months before the 16-day government shutdown in October 2013, and therefore does not reflect employee views of that event.Among individual federal organizations, 75.4 percent saw their overall employee satisfaction and commitment ratings decrease in 2013, compared with 66 percent in 2012. More specifically, 89.5 perc ent of large agencies, 59.1 percent of mid-size agencies, 48.3 percent of small agencies and 78.7 percent of subcomponents experienced a decrease in employee satisfaction with their jobs and workplaces in 2013.Agencies At The TopThe number one large agency in 2013 is the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), which registered a job satisfaction and commitment score of 74 out of 100. In the mid-size rankings, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation took top honors, with a score of 82.3, followed by the Smithsonian Institution, with a score of 77.2. And how much do teenagers even really understand?Letâs face it, adults barely know whatâs going on, so for your children of any age, they just know that dad or mom is now home all day, not working.I grew up in Armonk, N.Y. - IBMâs world headquarters. It was the Microsoft town of the 1970s, and it was a different era for job security.In Armonk, almost everyoneâs father worked for IBM. My friends whose dads (and in those days, it was only the dads) who worked at the global headquarters in our town had already worked for IBM around the world. The kids always told me that IBM stood for âIâve Been Moved.â If you ended up at the world headquarters, you had a job for life. It was like the Stepford Husbands: All the fathers wore a white shirt, similar ties and blue suits. Back then, it seemed that no one ever lost his job.I have to confess: Iâve never been fired myself, much less had to explain it to my family. But todayâs economy has affected so many of my friends. Frankly, today, itâs the global reality.But that doesnât make it any easier, especially when youâre thinking about what to tell the kids.Itâs especially difficult if this is the first time you have lost your job.Explaining it to your kids can be an emotional dilemma. When it comes down to it, whatever the reason, youâve lost your job. âDownsized,â âright-sized,â âlet go,â âposition eliminatedâ⦠Even if you got a great severance package, youâre still out of work. And none of this vocabulary helps explain it to your kids. They hear you networking on the phone and see you spending a lot of time on the computer, but none of it makes sense.âDad lost his job.â What does that mean? Did he misplace it?âLaid-offâ moms and dads tell me that sharing the news with their children is one of the hardest things theyâve ever done. There are many ways to do it, if you choose to do it at all.The âjust tell the family straight outâ approachA common approach is the âjust tell the family straight outâ philosophy. Mom and dad sit down and tell the children together. From the parents I have heard this from, it sounds almost like theyâre sitting their children down to tell them they are getting divorced. For some of my friends, announcing a divorce would have been easier.The âjust tell the truthâ family usually includes a laid-off worker who got a great severance and can keep the benefits package for a while. (Note: You may think the buyout package is great now, but wait until you see how long it takes you to find a new job.) These parents just explain it. The kids are five, 10, 17. ⦠Everyone gets the story.Of course, ther e can be a downside. What do you think your kids are thinking? Do they tell their friends? Your relatives? (Ugh! The relatives! You almost forgot about them, right?) What do you tell the relatives? Wow, getting fired for anyone just really sucks.The âdonât worry the kidsâ approachThen I have other friends who really donât want their children to know. In some cases, itâs a pride thing. In others, because mom may have already lost more than one job, itâs a âI donât want the kids to worryâ thing. These laid-off parents actually get up in the morning, get dressed for work, and drive around - maybe stop at the mall or the gym - until the kids leave for school. Then itâs back home to start looking for work. This plan often goes awry when prospective employers call the house and leave messages your kids end up hearing. And how can you network if youâre so busy lying to your kids? This ânot telling the kidsâ thing has got to be one stressful charade.The âtell t hem whatâs possible while youâre still employedâ approachSo, how do you tell your kids youâre unemployed? Or do you keep it to yourself? Do you wait and see how long it takes to find a new job? I would love to hear from you - even if youâre still working - how have you or would you tell your kids the bad news?Here is my advice. Everyone should be on âorange alert.â Be cautious, prepared and ready. Have your resume up-to-date, no matter how secure you feel.Usually the first thing our friends and family tell us when they are fired is that they were surprised. Surprised? Half of the U.S. is unemployed, but everyoneâs always shocked when it happens to them. Explain to your children now the state of the economy. Tell them that mom and dad are lucky to be working, but you never know. Teach them not to judge their friendsâ parents who may have lost their jobs. Reassure them that it will be okay, because eventually you will find a new job.Teach your children that the mos t important things in life are health, family and being together. Mom or dad can always find another job, but having one another is what really matters.

However, it is something that our minds automatically pick up on, whether we realize it or not. Body language is a good way to tell if someone is scared, nervous, excited, happy, etc. These are all things that can affect you during an important interview. Your body language can easily tell the hiring manager that youâre not comfortable, leading them to possibly believe you wouldnât be comfortable with the job or the company. You want to take control of your body language, and make conscious efforts to make yourself appear calm, cool, and collected.Make eye contact.Failure to make eye contact is a way to show the interviewer that you are nervous and not very sure of yourself. When you make eye contact, you exude confidence and show that you are comfortable in the situation and with the interviewer. Be careful not to make too much eye cont act, however. If you are staring the interviewer down, they may wonder if you are trying to be aggressive or just arenât up to par with social cues. They will also probably feel very uncomfortable and want to end the interview sooner rather than later.Sit up straight.While it may be an easy thing to forget, or hard to control in general, good posture is always a must. If you are leaning back, you may come off as lazy or arrogant. If you are leaning forward, you may seem overly-aggressive. If you are slouching you, may appear to be lazy. The best neutral position is sitting with a straight back, showing interest in what is happening around you.Use hand gestures.When youâre speaking, go ahead and use your hands, too. When people get nervous, they tend to wring their hands or hide them altogether. This is an easy way to express your anxiety to an interviewer. Hiding your hands can also make you seem subconsciously distrustful to the interview. Keep your hands out and open. As an ad ded bonus, gesturing your hands while talking is a good way to show interest and passion in what youâre discussing.Smile.This should be one of the easiest parts of the body to control. It also doesnât take much effort to keep a small smile during an interview. If you have trouble smiling, or get comments about looking angry with a resting face, then you may want to practice this pre-interview. You want the smile to look genuine- not forced. If you arenât smiling during an interview, it could be interpreted in a multitude of ways. An interviewer may think you donât really want to be at the interview, that youâre unhappy, that you feel that the interview is a waste of your time, etc.Have a firm handshake.This is actually one of those things that a lot of hiring managers take into account, whether the facts are baseless or not. Having a firm handshake shows that you are confident and in control of yourself. If you have a weak handshake, this can often come across as having a âweakâ personality type. Be careful not to be too firm in the handshake, though. You donât want to make it a contest.Keep your arms open.Your arms should remain relaxed at your sides, or with your hands resting in your lap. As mentioned previously, itâs never a bad idea to use your hands when talking. The one thing you do not want to do is have your arms crossed. Keeping your arms crossed is like keeping a barrier between yourself and the interviewer. It comes across as defensive and resistant. If your arms arenât crossed, you are automatically considered more approachable.Nod while listening.Everyone wants to feel like they are being listened to and appreciated for what they have to say. An interviewer is no different. Nodding your head to signal that you are listening is a good way to keep the interviewer moving along while showing your attentiveness. If you are just staring at the interviewer or not making eye contact at all, they may think that you arenât giving yo ur full attention or just donât care much about what is being said.Sit still.Uncounscious fidgeting is something a lot of people do, especially when they are nervous. Make a conscious effort to think about what you are doing. Are you a nail-biter? Keep your hands away from your mouth. Donât jiggle your legs. Donât play with a stray strand of hair. That nervous energy will only translate over into the interview, distracting both yourself and the interviewer from the goal at hand. You want the interviewer to be focused on what youâre saying, not on what youâre (unconsciously) doing.

Working Moms of Special Needs Children Working Moms of Special Needs Children Since graduating college, I have worked in a number of fulfilling and challenging positions that have allowed me to utilize my training and skills and left me feeling like I made a unique contribution. Working outside the home and interacting with peers is what my brain craves and what I need to live a balanced life. Once my daughter was diagnosed with autism, my views of fulfilling and challenging completely shifted. If my nanny went to the therapies, would I completely understand how to carry the therapy over at home? If I went to therapies with her, that would mean I would have to quit my job and if I did, could I afford the therapies? Most children with special needs have a lifelong condition, requiring parents to become an expert in the condition including how to handle the childâs difficulties and behaviors. The recommended therapy for most kids with autism starts at 25 hours per week, not to mention occupational, physical and speech. In addition, parents are finding diet impacts their children, requiring learning special recipes, buying foods they may not be familiar with â" all while trying to work their job and attend to their other children. Many children with special needs also have a lot of doctorâs appointments as well as hospital stays and need to be kept home from school more often than typically developing children. Parents of Special Needs Children are Chronically Stressed A 2009 study found that mothers of adolescents and adults with autism experience stress very similar to the stress felt by combat soldiers. In addition, these moms struggled with frequent fatigue and work interruptions as well as spent significantly more time caregiving than moms of those without disabilities. This chronic stress translates into an average shortening of their life expectancy by 9 to 12 years, leaving more moms stressed out about who will take care of their special needs child(ren) when they are gone. Research has shown if your child has ADHD, this results in increased problems with family and marital functioning, disrupted parent-child relationships, reduced parenting efficacy and once again, stress. Balancing Life with a Special Needs Child Family/Friend support. I was very fortunate to have the support of my family who help care for my daughter while I work and also if I need time out with friends. Many times, one parent has to give up work to take care of their special needs child, meaning the working partner is often working longer hours to assure she/he doesnât lose their job. This can further stress the relationship. If you are out of state and donât have a family/friend network available to you, please check with your local regional center to see if you are eligible for respite (funds allocated to assist parents in paying for caregivers) and for trustworthy recommendations. Examine your career path. I changed career paths and now I am a clinical homeopath, certified CEASE therapist and nutritionist. All of these helped my daughter, so I took courses to help other parents looking for solutions. My schedule is flexible to accommodate parents of special needs children so we can meet in person or Skype any day of the week. This career also keeps my daughter front and center. What I practice helps everyone, including her.Talk with human resources to see if there are any benefits or special programs they offer to help parents of children with special needs. Discuss work options with your employer. Is it possible to work some of your hours while your child is in a therapy session? Can your hours shift to start earlier in the day so your significant other or family member can care for your child while you start work? Can you take on late night conference calls that others dread as part of your work hours? Examine what work items are flexible and make thought out suggestions to your employer.Social Gatherings. These can be difficult with special needs children, but can help you find support and comfort. There are groups that meet weekly or monthly and if you canât find one, they are easy to start. This can help you discover if there are other therapies, better therapists and also perhaps trust in other parents that can potentially trade baby-sitting times for their children. The bottom line is ask for help. As special needs parents, we become experts relying on ourselves to help our children, however, figuring out what you need to help your child succeed is what ends up being the driving force at work and at home.
